In Barack Obama's exact words, “We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded,”
This statement begs a number of questions. First, what are the CIA and FBI for if not to protect the nations civilians? What sort of equipment does he see fit to use in this sort of capacity? Will we soon be parking tanks alongside our fire tankers in local fire stations? If not, why should it be "just as well funded".
Perhaps he intends it as some sort of local neighborhood watch program. If so, I would imagine most citizens would gladly take part for little or nothing. I guess what bothers me the most is that he honestly believes, without having yet seen his first national intelligence briefing, that we need another "security force" among our citizenry.
In a recent discussion
"Maybe he just doesn't realize we don't need it, and we can better fund the FBI and CIA." Was the next statement my Obama supporting acquaintance made. My response, "So either he's too dumb to be President or we can't trust him and he plans on turning his DSF against those who don't support him."
"Well." he said.
"Well, I think that's scary." I responded.
The entire conversation happened quickly, and I am sure my counterpart dismissed it as lunacy, but, if you look back at some of the worst "big brother" situations of the twentieth century, there were large domestic forces created, which used status and financial reward to encourage members to smoke out members of the citizenry who disagreed with the current regime. I fear we are headed in that direction, with a President who does not feel the need to salute the American flag.

Jason,
It astounds me how many Americans are afraid of Barack Obama because he might pursue policies that have already been pursued by the current Bush Administration! I hear so many people quoted on the radio, saying that Obama will become a dictator. We never hear what they're basing that on, nor do we hear how that's different from George W. Bush, who often jokes: "It would be easier if this were a dictatorship--as long as I'm the dictator!" It's a joke, surely, but then, look at all the freedoms we've lost under the current administration, in the name of making us safer from the people who "hate us for our freedoms." Do you know that the The Army 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has been redeployed from Iraq to American soil? Word is that it will become a permanent mission (details here: http://www.armytimes.com/ news/2008/09/army_homelan d_090708w/) This isn't the first time the U.S. Army has been deployed on U.S. soil in recent memory. Troops were used in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. U.S. troops aren't exactly the same as a proposed national security force (and we're assuming, for the sake of your argument that Obama was NOT talking about beefing up the police, or the FBI, or other already-in-place entities) but to me it sounds similar to a private security force, such as Blackwater, an organization that has also been very active on U.S. soil under the current administration. How is Blackwater different from this proposal, and if it isn't, how is the use of this mercenary force on U.S. soil okay? Is it just that you prefer the politics of the president currently doing this, but oppose the politics of the president that might do this in the future? I smell a good article for you here, one that might get a lot of hits. I look forward to reading it! |

Actually, after a bit more research, I believe the domestic security force Obama refers to is a bit allegorical--he seems to be talking about improving our security by peaceful, more diplomatic outreach in the world. It's hard to get that when the quote is taken out of context.

Actually, looking at the context of the comment Barack Obama made, perhaps he was speaking allegorically? I believe his point is that rather than relying on the Armed Forces to ensure our safety, we need to work as a nation at improving relations with other nations, to develop and encourage better understanding around the world, making us safer in that way as well.
(This might be a duplicated comment. If so, sorry!) |

Domestic security is avail able in our local and state police departments and state militias. A federal Domestic Security Force smacks of totalitarianism. Big government needs an enforcement arm and this is the first 'rumor' regarding the Obama administration. Obamanation was the catch phrase of bumper stickers but reality may not be too far away. The voting in the House and Senate is too close to be of any help for reason to prevail. The next 2 years must be a concerted move to bring balance to the legislature. Clean sweeps are bad for the running of a country.
