Americans, wake up. Do you realize how easy it would be to devastate the people of the United States? Hurricane Katrina was a real wake up call. A natural disaster was all it took. The levies broke and left thousands running for refuge. Once they found refuge, they still needed help. Not only did they need help for the moment, they are still being cared for years later. This caused me to think. What if a tornado demolished an entire city? What about an earthquake? Then it really hit me. What if we just lost our electricity? What if our food supply of meats and vegetables was severely impeded? Supermarkets would have nothing to sell us. I realized very quickly, it wouldn't take much to take down an American. People who live in third world countries would fare better than any American. They've learned to live with nothing. We, however, depend on everything but ourselves in order to survive. Losing our electricity would certainly throw our nation into a death hole. The elderly would more than likely die for lack of heat. The young and middle-age wouldn't know what to do. What about all the people
dependent on city water, what would they do? We are so far from self-sufficiency I fear that people in Africa would survive longer than an American who suffers through any unforeseen interruption of our basic utilities. We're in an age now that most of our grandmothers who grew up on a farm and killed chickens for their Sunday dinner are dead. We don't have anyone to tell this generation how it was once done. How many people know what herbs are edible? There are berries that grow in the woods, but who could identify them. When I think about The Great Depression, I know Americans now would have a hard time making it through that. Scary as it is, our economy doesn't appear to be much different from those days. We are so far removed from that era and how things were done in an ordinary day, we would surely shrivel up and die if our economy crashed. So, when I look at our nation and hear about terrorists and other countries who would like to put us in our place. I shake my head and say, "We are a spoiled people, it wouldn't take much!" There is talk about terrorists and biological warfare. They don't need that kind of sophistication. Knock out a few power substations. We need to wake up.
