I am living the life of adventure in the last frontier... okay sometimes I am just living right NEXT to the life of adventure, but I try to mix it up a bit. Towering mountains, crazy abundant wildlife, glaciers, tundra, and the PEOPLE! Everyone has a story worth hearing around here.
If I seem to be quiet lately, it's because almost every waking second is going to preparing for this year's Winterfair at my son's elementary school, Winterberry Charter School. If you live in Anchorage and have kids, this is a super event to attend. It is on Saturday, February 9th from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. There will be music, puppet plays, crafts stations, games and food. Our school is Waldorf-inspired, so all of the materials are natural and the games are things that you don't find at most events like these.
I will be working at the needle felting table. I personally cut out 150 butterflies from 100% wool felt. Crafters in the needle felting area will choose a butterfly, turtle or fish. There will be bright bold fibers of wool roving (wool before it is spun into yarn). We'll add little bits of these colors where we want them and then we will felt them with a felting needle. My husband will be at the knot tying table teaching kids up to five different knots (right up his mountain climbing alley, he's a knot-o-phile). These are just two of the many activities at the event.
Winterfair is a fundraiser. There is no cover charge to get in (there is music and dancing too), but there is a minimal charge to do a craft or play a game. Payment is made by "gems" which are purchased at the entrance. There is a bake sale too. And the school store, which I stock and run, will be open. Our talented pool of parents have handmade knits for sale (you won't believe the skills that our knitters display). We carry natural art supplies such as beeswax crayons, beeswax modeling wax, Lyra color pencils, handmade knitting needles, etc). It will be a great event! (I can't wait until it's over so I can sleep!)
