Why is it that, as soon as you put kids in a car and you're nowhere near a bathroom their bladders kick in?! I usually try and do my best to make sure the kids go right before leaving, but sometimes I forget and then I pay the consequences.

Okay, the results are in: I'm officially old. I am now calculating my age by how many times a day I have to tell my son to pull his pants up so that I don't have to look at his underwear any more. I think on average, I'm about 58.

The whole concept of "grounding" my kids doesn't appeal to me. I was never grounded as a kid, and the method seems like one that punishes me as much as the kid in trouble, so I try to avoid it, or dole out only two or three day increments if the situation merits it. But when a letter came in the mail the other day informing me that my fifteen-year-old was at risk of failing one of his classes AND the letter stated it was the second notice of this kind (I never saw a first) I pulled out all the stops and grounded him for a month.

Yes, that's been the mantra at our house this past week. Chalk it up as parenting challenge #256 (or somewhere thereabouts): dealing with nighttime monsters.

My husband is Brazilian and I’m American, so we are doing our best to raise our kids bilingually. We both speak each other’s language as well, so the kids can talk to either of us in either language and be understood. Unfortunately, since they’re being raised in the U.S. they tend to opt for English 99% of the time. We do our best to stick with Portuguese when we talk to them so they at least hear it on a regular basis, and for the most part they do understand everything that is said to them. They just tend to answer in English–except for when it comes to farting.

Having moved to Florida within the last year, I have recently been introduced to the world of FCAT full force. Not only do I have children in school, I also do some tutoring with kids in an after school program so I get to experience this exasperating creation in a variety of ways. What is the FCAT? It stands for Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, and  I’m of the opinion that it isn’t very comprehensive at all. I also think that way too much of a child’s life in school: 1) is spent preparing for this monster, and 2) depends upon this multiple choice headache for their educational survival.

There’s nothing more exciting than life in the same house with a fifteen year old boy. Possibly the only moodier experience would be that of living with a pregnant woman. Since I was the pregnant one in this household, my husband would have to cover that topic. On fifteen year old boys, though, I have plenty to say.

Even before I became a mother I always knew I wanted to be a mother. Well, okay, maybe not always, but after a certain age in my twenties, it was something I definitely knew would be a part of my future. And once that was decided, I knew that I would be a mother of childREN and not just child. Part of my reason for this is because that my view is that, even though having siblings can be annoying at times, they are a good way to learn that you are not the only creature that exists in the world.

There are certain aspects of parenting that bring about more joy than others: the first your child smiles, the first time they say mommy, the first steps, AND when they are finally ready to be potty-trained!

I am constantly amazed by the trail of destruction my two-year-old leaves around the house on an ongoing basis. From the moment he awakens in the morning to the moment he finally collapses in bed at night, he is constantly in the midst of some kind of activity to see how quickly he can take something apart, or an experiment to see if smashing something or jumping on it works better as a means of destruction.

I’ll be the first to admit that having children is what got me started watching cartoon channels for the first time since elementary school, but when it comes to SpongeBob Squarepants, I continue watching of my own volition. It’s hilarious!

Don’t be like me. Don’t wait to do something until you’ve already become a victim. There are ways you CAN protect yourself before becoming a vicitm, but if you’re like me, it was something that seemed like an awful lot of trouble for a thing that was “never going to happen to me.”
