A CRYSTAL BLUE, PACIFIC WATERS BAY.
I heard so much about Acapulco, from several Mexican and other nationalities friends, that I really, wanted to see and enjoy it; so, when my wife Anna and I were in Memphis, Tn. to purchase a new 1967 Mustang (six cylinder-straight shift) for the now incredible price of $2,551, and drive it down to Central America where I worked, we stopped on the way south in Mexico City to visit a couple, very good friends of ours.- Plans were made, our friends arranged for their children to stay with relatives, and we were on our way to Acapulco, for a long week-end. By the way, the name "Acapulco" comes from the Nahuatl dialect and means: "place of big reeds".
It was a long drive and the time was limited, so we didn't get to see and do even 50% of what I hoped for; but far from being disappointed. enjoyed it immensely. Stayed at a
Motel about a block from the beach, and the first thing we saw was the legendary divers at "La Quebrada;" first climbing the 59 foot cliff to a niche, where the diver kneels before the image of the Virgin Mary to pray before diving - carefully calculating the timing of the surf rise in the narrow space between the cliff and a parking and observation
plaza - where the diver will enter the water.- The "Perla" Club with a wide almost wall to wall glass window, is the ideal spot to watch the divers, while sipping on whatever you
ordered from the bar. There is usually a young kid around, asking for contributions from the spectators on behalf of the divers.
Had dinner at a beach front Bar/Restaurant with live music and dancing, that served catch of the day "Guachinango" (red snapper), washed down with a cold Corona beer, or two.- Had a great time! We briefly enjoyed the Acapulco nightlife, visiting two or three night clubs with good shows; but ran out of time before we could do much more, and after driving our friends back to Mexico City, Anna and I continued on to El Salvador in Central America.
Returned to Acapulco twice within the following five years, with enough time to explore places of interest and available activities before flying back home.
A touring large yacht makes a day long excursion; a guide pointing out and commenting on the sights - including the house of the late actor John Wayne, not far from the divers cliff.- At noon it docks for lunch in "Roqueta" island. A beer drinking couple of donkeys come around, hoping the tourists will buy them a beer. Bottles are placed on the floor
and picked up by mouth and drank in a couple of gulps by either of them. Curiously, they will not touch any partially filled bottle. Its either full, or nothing. Picky donkeys!
By the way they walked, it was obvious they had more than they share.
Stayed at Hotel El Presidente on Condesa Beach, where I tried para-sailing; must confess I was at first no too comfortable with the idea - a bit scary, actually - but it turned out to be a relaxing, lots of fun experience.
I was surprised to learn that a huge attraction for tourists is all he natural marijuana plants growing every where in the mountains. Many tourists go for hikes, where they pick
some of worlds best marijuana.- Marijuana is actually legal in this town and you are allowed to smoke it any time any where.
Half way between the Airport and downtown Acapulco, on a pink and white theme hill is Las Brisas Hotel, with 263 "casitas" (bungalow style rooms) each having a private pool
under the blue skies and with a bay view, but totally out of sight. You can swim or sun bathe naked if you wish, in complete privacy.
At the bottom of the hill is the Hotel's private La Concha Beach Club, with salt and fresh water pools. Bars towed by pink and white jeeps make the rounds around the pool, so
people can order and have a drink without having to come out of the water.- Similar pink and white jeeps are available for rent, so you can roam around the town as you wish.
Not far is "Puerto Marques," a beach on an estuary like part of the bay, known for serving at water side tables, fresh seafood and specially shellfish and a wide variety of mollusks.- Small, two persons sail boats are for rent for visitors to enjoy breeze and surf.
Nightlife is very active and vibrant; many Clubs and Hotels featuring top rated shows and performers from around the world. A night on the town, easily lasting until well after
sunrise.
That was my last visit to Acapulco, several years ago. Since, new attractive tourists destinations have become very popular - Puerto Vallarta, Puerto Escondido and others - along the Mexican Pacific coast; but Acapulco remains the classic, unique. beautiful and unforgettable Acapulco!
