We have a different type of dinosaurs down here!

We have a different type of dinosaurs down here!
A friend of mine from Grands Rapids,Michigan is always complaining,he complains about everything, I mean everything. (sorry B.J but you know it's true and I will say it in your face if I have to!). Its very sad that at times we complain about things that other people somewhere are dying to have! B.J and I where working on an article the other day and our computer somehow decided to misbehave. It just seemed to have developed a mind of it's own and was somehow bent on harassing and embarassing two guys who had subjected to stress and distress over the last quarter. B.J naturally began to curse.

He dug deeper into his arsenal and came up with some words that are unprintable even in liberal cyberspace! We started discussing the evolution of computers through the ages. During our daysb in High School we had 386SX's with green monitor and we coined the name "Green Machines".You would switch the Green Machine on and would produce a sound that would drown all the sweet sounds in the school computer laboratory. The sound reminded me of the local hammer-mill! The school later acquired brand new 'state-of-the-art' 486's with 14inch monitors and life became great! The increase in speed was phenominal! I am dead serious about this, we could not believe the change. We also got headsets witn mic's and good Lord we were in heaven! Today I have a 3Ghz rig with 2Gb RAM, 2x 160 Gb HD's,2x DvdRw's,2x 400w power supplies,8x Usb ports,19" LCD,TV card,5.1 stereo, all housed in supercooled tower that runs silently.  The imposing I-don't-know-how-many-inch plasma screen placed on the floor is like a windows to cyberspace. A wireless keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse bring a little bit ( at times admire my own modesty!) of sophistication into the scene.

B.J owns a similar rig but that equipment is not for office work! We are computer enthusiast (remember my modesty!) and we all know that any computer person worthy of the name 'geek' takes pride in his rig and a good rig is the silk thread that separates art and science. It is guarded jealously and one friend of ours once got into serious trouble with his missus after she overheard us talking 'geek' in his lounge. I say his remark artistic and yet possessed a minutely provocative (women are sensitive) element.

After remarking, "I would rather sell Ruth (aka the Wife) than Big Bertha (the monster rig)" . Our poor friend had to spend the next 14 nights or so with Big Bertha.

Big Bertha, The Genesis (B.J's rig) and Silver Shadow II (mine) are works of art that took us a lot of money to buildb and we enjoy every second we spend with them. I,however, am still fascinated by the evolution of these fine creatures that I went and bought a decommissioned 386SX from a certain High School, since I now live a million miles from my old school (and I dont think they still have them anyway! Modernisation-robbing us of our past). I renamed it Evolution and it has as much right to be loved by me as the Silver Shadow .The ancient thing is still working but you know how it is- the old cannot be hurried. After all these yet apart, its humming and puffing is like music to ears and reminds me of the good old days that have long gone by. I can say I proudly own a dinosaur! Dinosaurs are not extinct they just changed their form.

Hermann Gmeiner, I salute you.
