Herbs: The Useful Plants.
* Rubbing pennyroyal leaves on the skin can prevent mosquito bites.
* Relieve painful sunburned skin by adding an infusion of calendulas ( two tablespoons dried or four sprigs fresh to four cups boiling water) to the bath water.
* Refresh tired eyes by soaking cotton pads with fennel tea and placing pads on your eyes.
* Freeze bee balm or borage flowers in individual ice cube tray sections to make attractive cubes for summer
drinks.
* Bath dogs or cats in bathwater infused with pennyroyal to repel fleas.
* Include a sprig of rosemary ( for remembrance) or lavender ( for love) in cards or letters sent to friends
* Make lemon thyme honey by adding several sprigs of the herb to a pint of warm honey. Allow to sit for two
weeks , remove the herb and use.
* Add a bay leaf to a canister of flour in the summer to prevent infestation of weevils.
* Substitute nasturtium seeds in place of capers.
* Add anise seeds to apple pie.
* Chew anise or dill seeds to freshen the breath.
* Add a few leaves of lovage to your bath water, to cleanse and deodorize.
* Add parsley to dishes containing garlic to lighten the flavor.
* Add one or two crushed coriander seeds to a cup of coffee.
* Add sweet cicely leaves or seeds to tart fruits to reduce the tartness and acidity, while cutting down on sugar.
* Add a leaf of lemon verbena to the bottom of the dish in which custard is to be baked.
* Use garlic chives instead of garlic to make garlic toast with flavor but without the heartburn.
* Make a refreshing footbath using rosemary, mint or mugwort.
* Bring out blonde highlights in hair by rinsing with an infusion of chamomile or yarrow.
* Rinse dark hair with an infusion of rosemary or sage.
* Place several leaves of lemon grass or fennel leaves inside a fish before broiling or baking.
* Use tansy, either as an infusion or a companion planting , to repel ants.
* Chew anise seeds to stop hiccups.
* Dip sage or basil leaves in batter and fry in hot oil to serve as appetizers.
* When grilling corn on the cob, tuck sprigs of mint and a pat of butter inside the husks.
* Instead of using a basting brush , try using sprigs of herbs.
