I am slightly embarrassed to say that I am 21 and the proud owner of two Webkinz pets; a penguin and a pony. But this just goes to show how cool these things are.

Webkinz are addictive.
My boyfriend always teases me about having been spoiled growing up. I always respond with, "I was NOT spoiled... they never got me a pony!"

So he got me a pony. A Webkinz pony. I think I spent about 6 hours on the Webkinz website that day, playing with my pony. And each day that followed.

My pony is now rich in Webkinz dollars. The website has tons of ways to raise money with your pet, so you can buy things like food, clothing, furniture for the pet's room, and TOYS! There's an arcade full of games, some fluffed up versions of old favorite classics, like mah jong, there's a pig version of Pacman, and an ant version of that "snake" game; you know, the thing where you eat stuff and grow longer as you do, and you have to avoid eating yourself. There's a section of quizzes in all different categories and difficulty levels which also helps you earn Webkinz money. There's even an employment agency where your Webkinz pet can do different jobs everyday to make money! What more could a parent want... for their 21-year-old college student?

Really, though, this site is fantastic for kids. I'm going to school for teaching, and I've taken classes on child psychology and parenting. These cuddly little cuties are everything a parent could ask for. There's even a Webkinz community where you can socialize your pet with other pets in "chatrooms." These chatrooms, however, are limited in communication; you can pick from a list of phrases to say, but you can't type anything in. Way to keep out scary people. You can sit back and relax, mom. Pets can even play competitive games like checkers with other pets.

And of course, there's the having to take care of your pet. You have to feed him, play with him, keep him happy. I'm not sure what happens if you don't, though, because I just couldn't bare to see my pony or penguin suffer.

I can't see these darling little critters ever being a waste of money. They're only about $15, and every pet comes with an access code to a Webkinz account for a whole year. Your kid may have the attention span of a fruit fly, but I could definitely see parents (and college students, haha) getting addicted to the games and the daily activities Webkinz always has.

What's even cooler, is they have a MILLION different kinds of animals now! I have a pony and a penguin. They've got different kinds of ponies, kittens, puppies, koalas, pandas, snakes, birds, monkeys, probably any kind of animal you could think of by now.

So next time your kid bugs you for a puppy... get him a Webkinz puppy.
