There's a new product on the shelves promising to help us eat 30% less. Does it work?

SlimShots is the newest weight loss aid to hit the shelves.
I saw boxes of this new stuff called SlimShots appetite controller while wandering through Walmart. Curious but wallet conscious, I typed this new concoction into Google.
The product resembles those little plastic containers of coffee creamers. Some people said that's what they taste like, too. They're a vanilla flavored creamy liquid made of a mix of oat and palm oil. Each little cup contains 20 calories. The instructions say take one with breakfast, another one with lunch if you feel the need, and your hunger should be sustained for up to eight hours, reducing your cravings to snack and making you feel full much quicker when having a meal.
The down side? These miracle supplements are not FDA approved. They're also pricey. A box of 21 doses is $24.99 at Walmart, and a box of 30 is $29.99 at pharmacies like CVS, and can even cost up to $40 elsewhere. You could end up spending over $60 a month on these things.
And do they even work?
The website for the shots has four clinical studies for the product; however, the studies are only over the course of a day or so. Over the course of a day, the study participants ate up to 30% less. They don't have any studies supporting weight loss or long term effectiveness.
There is, however, plenty of evidence behind other oils from whole grains, such as flax seed oil, having appetite-reducing and other healthful benefits. Putting a spoonful or two of ground flax seed in your cereal or oatmeal in the morning will help you feel fuller, longer. Perhaps Slimshots has the same idea. I'm just not so sure such a small dose could have such a powerful effect.
Another thing consumers ought to keep in mind is that this product definitely will not work if you are an emotional or stress eater. This product is designed to make you feel physically full, and therefore not desire food for nutritional reasons, which is completely separate from wanting a brownie because you got fired from your job.
