Everyone Enjoys a Journey

The other film in this week’s cheese-fest was Journey to the Center of the Earth. This film has been made something like a million times and the Jules Verne Tale is also pretty old, so I think this was a great example of well-aged cheese. It really knocks your senses around and it has a pretty pleasing after-taste.

Journey follows Trevor Anderson (Brendan Fraser), a teacher (kind of) scientist (sort of) guy who has a lot on his plate, yet he manages to keep it all under control. His brother Max (Jean Michel Pare) disappeared something like 10 years ago while exploring a Jules Verne obsession, he is about to lose his laboratory (which doesn’t do much but try to justify his brother’s Jules Verne obsession), and he has to watch his nephew Sean (Josh Hutcherson) for ten days. After discovering a copy of Max’s favorite Jules Verne book (it’s obvious, right?) filled with notes, Trevor discovers a lead to his brother in Iceland where he meets the beautiful mountain guide Hannah (Anita Briem). He climbs a mountain to investigate, ends up trapped in a cave which then becomes a mine which then becomes the center of the Earth.

The movie was filmed as a 3D film, full of hundreds of things flying at your head, they even implemented new technology to work with HD theater screens and called it RealD (oooohhh). It would have been really cool, but nobody was showing it in RealD! The film is really great though. It’s filled with adventure, family fun, and beautiful scenery. Brendan Fraser plays the same character that he always plays, as does Josh Hutcherson, but it’s still really endearing. I’d recommend looking very hard for a theater that is implementing RealD, but if you aren’t successful finding one, I suggest investing in some cheap 3D glasses and checking this film out with your whole family.
