Hellboy is Heavenly
This week movie theaters around the nation were dominated by the magic of cheese. I personally have never tasted a cheese I haven’t liked, so I knew this week was going to rock! And with obesity and heart disease being two of this nation’s largest killers, I’m sure the rest of my country felt the same. The first and spiciest cheese was Hellboy 2: The Golden Army.
Hellboy 2 is a story about Hellboy (Ron Perlman), a demon released by the Nazis in World War II, and his relationship with humans that typically loathe him, basically. The surface story, however, revolves around an evil elf prince named Nuada (Luke Gross) who attempts to initiate a war between all manner of other-worldly creature and humans. Nuada’s intent is to reawaken an indestructible golden army created for the same purpose thousands of years before by overthrowing his father (Roy Dotrice) and reuniting the crown which controls the army. What follows are two tales of bittersweet love between Hellboy (Ron Perlman) and the combustible Liz (Selma Blair) and between fishman Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and Prince Nuada’s sister, Nuala (Anna Walton) as they try to prevent Nuada from succeeding. A new character that was absent from the first film is also introduced.
Director Guillermo del Toro made Hellboy 2 an absolute masterpiece by exhibiting elements of comic books that are typically lost in films in such a way that they don’t disrupt the overall flow of the movie. His fresh and frightening character design from Pan’s Labyrinth makes its way in to this film and fits in almost too perfectly. The man is an absolute genius. As for the actors, well, they delivered pretty magnificently as well.
