I am the mom of a toddler, wife to a computer dude. I need an outlet... and I love to write. What a great combo! When your house is on the market, these are little things people often overlook. The mantra goes: its not the housekeeping you DO that people notice, but rather what you DON'T do.
-Make sure ALL of your light bulbs work. Every single one.
-Wash and iron all the curtains and/or miniblinds.
-Wash the windows, inside and out.
-If you have pets, find an obscure location for their food dishes and litter boxes. These all leave behind unpleasant scents, and put thoughts of "what did little Rover do to the carpet that I can't smell right now...?" into the buyers' heads.
-Litter boxes now need to be scooped every single day for the same reasons listed above.
-Organize your drawers, cabinets, and closets so that people will envision all the space they’ll have upon buying the home. You may have run out of space, but your buyers' do not need to know that. Now is the best time to rent a storage unit and then have a yard/rummage/garage sale.
-Clean out the appliances staying with the house. Scour the oven, stove top and microwave, run an empty cycle in the dishwasher of water and vinegar, and wipe down the washer and dryer.
-Use a rag or Magic Eraser to wipe down both sides of every door in the house (get down on your knees and start at the bottom). Wipe down all the light switches too, or even consider replacing them. (If you have kids and/or animals this will shock you.)
-Don’t overpower your house with smells, but make sure if doesn’t stink. Laundry basket smell like gym socks? Give it a good cleaning with bleach, get a cover for it, and attach (somehow, be creative) a good quality dryer sheet to the cover. Intersperse a few plug-ins throughout the house.
-Wipe down all cabinet and drawer handles in the kitchen and bathrooms.
-Dust lampshades and light fixtures.
-Put all personal and financial information in a locked drawer not attached to the house. Buyers are allowed to look at/in anything part of the purchase. Potential buyers have been known to house shop as a front for stealing credit card numbers!
These are little things that take no money, just time and elbow grease, but will make a big difference. Your house needs to wow a buyer and stand out as better than the others. Follow these tips and your house its on its way to SOLD!
