I've been writing targeted copy for over 2 decades across all media. For the last 17 years, I've been a copywriter as well as a branding and marketing consultant. Articles I write are usually based on something scientific like my latest whim. Sports Med Website , AnneMoss.com and Webprepro Blog
View all articles by Anne Moss RogersDo you want a website that kicks butt? Or one that limps around in all its generic splendor? And you thought all you had to do was have a functioning site. If you are looking for that competitive edge, do what only 5% of the other website and blog owners are not doing. Learn how to find your target audience. Then get your website/blog to cater to them. Generic is out in case you missed the press release.
The internet is crowded. All the press about making millions online has attracted millions.
I have a news flash for you, most of them have no clue what they're doing and most of them will never have the motivation to follow through with what it really takes to do well, much less decent.
To stand out, you need to apply the advertising principles that have worked for decades. That is positioning to your target audience. Gone are the days when you could throw up site and have a vault of cash land effortlessly in your lap. You actually have to carve your position and your niche.
You think once people find out about this, they will start applying this strategy right and left? No way. That’s because most people are too lazy. All they want is that land-in-your-lap answer to nonstop wealth and they are too busy chasing rainbows to even notice they aren’t doing it right.
Why do you think half the ebooks out there have the word “lazy” in their title? You got it. The writers who write them know their market and they are catering to it. And I can promise you these writers are making far more that the lazy people who buy them.
I’ve done this target market thing over 20 years for clients
ranging from local businesses to national brands. I’m not going to try and sell
you on this approach if you’re on your maiden voyage on the internet. Because
it’s one of those things you realize after you have a website that isn’t making
enough to pay for popcorn at the movies. The more seasoned have figured out something
is missing. You can learn it. But you have to want to. And that, my friends, is
what separates the entrepreneurs from the rainbow chasers.

I love the way you break down the "must-haves" into six clear categories. I look forward to reading more!

That is a great article! You have spelled it out exactly right as to what many people are trying to do by skipping something as important as their copy, while trying to find the easy answers. If you learn to make a great website, you will succeed. If you don't want to learn, you are wasting your time. I love the way you wrote it - it was fun to read! And, hopefully a wake up call to many!

This is excellent advice for anyone who expects to make more than a handful of change online. I have always wondered why people do not target their niche, and now I know. They are just too lazy and want it to fall into their laps as it used to when the internet was like the wild west.

Very true and right on TARGET! I like the way you use visual cues to "show" what you mean.

Having been online for 8 years I must say your article is spot on. While I am definitely not in the lazy category this statement is so true, "The more seasoned have figured out something is missing".
I used your webpreppro and am the most excited I have been in 8 years; instead of trying to be all things to all men, I am now focused on two target markets; and my site and copy kicks butt. My only regret is that I wish I knew how to do it right 8 years ago. |
