During the peak of recorded music, there were hundreds of record labels, more recording artists than I can count, and a great variety of music styles. Now we have a few major labels, a few dozen artists, and styles pretty much limited to rock, rap, country, and related genres. Classical CDs are more difficult to find, and then a limited selection.

I agree with you, Adam. It's neither good nor bad, it just is the way it is, and we can either sit around complaining about it, or get out there and enjoy music. Thomas makes it sound like now, all music that exists is crappy mainstream manufactured garbage. Not true. Because of iTunes and podcasts, and internet radio stations, indie bands that couldn't otherwise afford to, can get their music out there. And you know, the bands and record labels that end up making it big do so because they're (gasp!) making smart business decisions, marketing their artists well, and taking advantage of opportunities. Instead of bemoaning how Britney Spears is ruining music, just turn off your FM radio, download some local singles, join their myspace groups (local bands LOVE new myspace friends), and participate in music.
